The mile claimer at Cagnes (12.05pm) has a couple of obvious candidates towards the top of the weights, but the one to appeal at a big price is Augustinus.

The German raider ran very well in defeat in a couple of strong Compiegne maidens last spring, before shedding his maiden tag in ready fashion at Chateaubriant.  Handed a mark of 39, he finished in midfield in a Quinte at Saint-Cloud and was then down the field in competitive and valuable sales races in Germany.

He’ll need to bounce back to form, but these are much calmer waters for his return to action, the seven-week break since his last run will have given his trainer Henk Grewe time to freshen him up, and off the claiming tag of €8,000, he is receiving 4kg+ from his main rivals.

Grewe’s representatives were 6-22 in claimers in France last year and with Demuro booked, Augustinus looks overpriced to give his trainer a first winner of 2022.
