Gavano hasn’t been seen since April, but Ludovic Gadbin’s colt is worth supporting on his belated return to action at Chantilly today (1.35pm).

He finished runner-up on his debut here in January, splitting subsequent Group performers Kingentleman and Machete, and looking a little unlucky not to make a winning debut.

Third on his next outing here the following month, in a race won by subsequent Group 3 third Implementation, he had 4L back to the fourth, Scottish Anthem, who is now a useful handicapper and had today’s favourite Monarchic behind when scoring at Compiegne last month.

Gavano has been off since finishing last in a class 1 in April, but he went so well on his debut last year, which is encouraging, as is the fact Gadbin has his team in such good form.  The booking of Guyon is another positive.

Favourite Monarchic is the obvious one to beat, but he has finished second on four of his last five outings and at the prices, it is worth taking him on with Gavano, in a race that lacks strength in depth.

Elsewhere on the card, I’m backing Grand Giomar Step in the two-year-old maiden (3.10pm).

I’ll make the write-up brief, as I need to get out of the office!  However, he showed up well for a long way in what looked a nice newcomers’ race at Longchamp on debut, has a nice enough page, a good draw in stall 2 and represents a yard whose juveniles tend to improve plenty from run one to two.  The 20-1 on offer looks too big.
