Andre Fabre’s juveniles have invariably improved for the run this term and Book Of Life looks a fair bet to become the next second-time-out winner from the yard at Compiegne today (12.40pm).
The son of Dark Angel finished a promising third on debut at Saint-Cloud a month ago. Draw wide, Barzalona was unable to get cover and he had the widest trip of the whole field. Book Of Life kept on really well in the home straight and was close at the line.
That wasn’t a vintage newcomers’ contest, but it was a good introduction and, given the record of Fabre’s juveniles this term, it’s highly likely there is more to come.
That’s supported by his pedigree; both male siblings to run gained black type, while the dam was a Listed winner at around this trip on very soft ground at Fontainebleau.
Gypsy Thief drops back a furlong after pushing Book Of Life’s stablemate (and Race Sharp selection) Make Me King close at Saint-Cloud, and that one’s subsequent second in the infamous Group 3 at Saint-Cloud last week suggests he is rightly favourite. However, Book Of Life has plenty of scope to progress and the 11/4 feels a shade too big.
12.40pm Compiegne – 1pt win Book Of Life win @ 11/4 (all firms)
Stephane Wattel introduced a really smart-looking filly at Saint-Cloud yesterday in Autumn Twilight and I’m hoping he can enjoy further success with Kadifa today (1.15pm).
She ran in the same maiden as our first selection Book Of Life on debut; the sixth finished runner-up in a class 2 next time, the fifth was just touched off in a maiden and the fourth won his maiden, so it looked a fair effort, particularly as the penny only looked to be dropping late on.
The daughter of Siyouni is out of a Listed-placed sprinter in the UK, herself a half-sister to 2017 Cheveley Park fifth Darkanna and smart Irish sprinter Logo Hunter. The granddam was another useful juvenile, finishing third in a soft-ground renewal of the Group 2 Cherry Hinton, so it’s a pedigree packed with good fillies.
This might not be the best of maidens and with that debut experience likely to hold her in good stead, she is well worth supporting.
1.15pm Compiegne – 2pts win, 1pt place Kadifa @ 4-1 (all firms)
The fillies’ Listed at Compiegne this afternoon (4.10pm) has an open look to it but while a case can be made for plenty of them, at the prices I think Mythicara looks a nice each-way bet.
She has had a fairly long season, winning at Cologne on her third start before finishing fourth in the German 1000 Guineas, in which she had a really poor trip having been drawn wide. She was very unlucky not to reach the frame that day, staying on really well from last in the straight, and she had another poor draw/wide trip when ninth in the German Oaks on her first attempt beyond a mile.
Her latest fourth in Listed company at Longchamp, when a head behind the re-opposing Ondulee, is a better indication of her ability, but I’m confident there is more to come at this trip, particularly now switching to softer ground.
Incidentally, Zelzal is a young sire doing particularly well with fillies, which make up his top five-rated runners from his first two crops. Connections will doubtless be keen to get some black type with this one as well, given she is a fourth foal half-sister to multiple soft-ground Group winner Mythico and dual Listed-placed filly Mythica.
4.10pm Compiegne – 1pt win, 0.5pt place Mythicara @ 20-1 (Fitzdares, Skybet, William Hill, 22-1 Bet365, 18-1 elsewhere)
Elsewhere on the card, Hiroo Shimizu’s My Lyka is a really interesting contender in the 1m4f maiden. He has only been seen once, when leading into the final furlong in a red-hot Longchamp maiden. Beaten only by Epic Poet and L’Astronome that day, he held every entry going this year, including the Arc. The price has gone on him, but he’s an interesting one to watch on reappearance as he could be a good bit better than these.
