You have to forgive a modest run at Vichy last time, but otherwise Omanense holds strong credentials and makes plenty of appeal stepping up in trip in the class 2 at Compiegne (2.35pm).
The daughter of Dubawi won her maiden over 1m3f on reappearance in April, beating a subsequent Group 3-placed filly and earning herself a Ribblesdale entry (having already been entered in the Prix de Diane).
Her subsequent staying-on third at Chantilly has worked out very nicely, with the subsequent Diane fifth and ninth Beaute Cachee and Fall In Love either side of her. She was doing her best work late that day, which was also the case when fourth at Longchamp on her next start, finishing just in front of stablemate Sea The Sky, who finished third at Group 3 level at Deauville earlier this month.
I’m happy to forgive a below-par run at Vichy on her return from seven weeks off under the yard’s apprentice (and it is a track that can throw up some odd results), and this step up in trip looks a good move. Favourite Wennemar is respected after a promising debut win, but Omanense is the highest-rated of these, has Barzalona back on board and is overpriced at 6-1.
2.35pm Compiegne – 1pt win Omanense @ 6-1 (all firms)
Zarak Star has run two good races to date and can make it third time lucky at Compiegne (3.10pm).
I tipped her in this column when she finished third at Vichy on his latest outing, but she was given too much to do that day, running a very strong final two furlongs but proving unable to reel in the front pair (runner-up Ridaviya re-opposes today). The fourth home, Fragile, won her maiden at Clairefontaine next time.
Zarak Star had encountered trouble in running when fourth on debut at Saint-Cloud, but I’m hoping she’ll be given a more prominent ride today and give her yard a seventh winner from their last 19 runners.
3.10pm Compiegne – 1pt win Zarak Star @ 6-1 (Ladbrokes, Coral, Bet365, 11/2 elsewhere)
The two-year-old maiden looks an interesting race with the future in mind. Fabre runs two and I’m interested in Lasting Impression. Sent off an odds-on favourite in France, she raced on the wing and looked to get tired late on. The daughter of Kingman is a half-sister to last year’s Group 3 winner Noticeable Grace for these connections.
