A couple that we have backed in recent weeks reappear in the 1m1f maiden at Fontainebleau this afternoon (2.35pm), Chateau Fort and Salernitano.

I’m sure Chateau Fort is better than the form he showed when a disappointing seventh on debut at Chantilly in February – he’s a well-bred and well-regarded colt, but I am going again on Salernitano.

Runner-up to a very well-regarded German raider on debut on the AW in November, he was a shade keen early on reappearance at Fontainebleau, but travelled really nicely into the race before just looking to tire in the final furlong.

Trainer Gianluca Bietolini mentioned just before the race that he felt the horse was only 80% ready, and with the yard now in much better form as well, it’s reasonable to expect a good step forwards.  I thought that was every bit as strong a race as this one looks on paper, and the drop back to 1m1f looks a good move.

2.35pm Fontainebleau – 1pt win Salernitano @ 4-1 (all firms, though 9/2 with WillHill)
