Grand Steeple day at Auteuil and while there might be a bet or two to follow later on the card, I’m keen to get stuck into one in the opening handicap hurdle (12.23pm).

The UK equivalent of a 0-102 handicap hurdle, it’s a weak contest despite the numbers.  I tried to claim Foret Vierge two starts back to run in this (the trainer defended) and she isn’t without a chance, but the ground will be quicker than when she ran away with a claimer here in March.

At a big price, I’m keen on Tilin Talan.  The lightly-raced seven year old made a winning start for Stephanie Jaffrelon-Bedon at Argentan in October, getting the better, off level weights, of rivals that would be significantly too high in the ratings to get into this.

He has finished seventh in two starts back from a break, but ran creditably on the first occasion from the foot of the weights in February, and then led to the last over CD last time on softer ground than he will encounter today.

Drying conditions are in his favour, the booking of Kevin Nabet (who rode a double here yesterday) is a big plus and the 16-1 on offer is too big.

12.23pm Auteuil – 1pt each-way Tilin Talan 5 places @ 16-1 (Bet365, Skybet, Unibet, Betfred, 4 places elsewhere)

In a rush to get to Auteuil, so I’ll keep my second tip brief! In the Prix Marechal Foch (1.00pm), Captain Speaking has a big chance and has to be backed.

He was travelling well when getting the rail ditch and fence all wrong last time, a fence that also got the better of him in the Prix Montgomery back in 2022.  One of the class horses in this field, connections will be glad the ‘juge de paix’ doesn’t feature in this amateur riders’ contest and given that’s the case, the 13/2 on offer is worth taking.

1.00pm Auteuil – 1pt win Captain Speaking @ 13/2 (all firms, 7-1 with William Hill)
