Auteuil’s final meeting of 2022 takes place today and the Listed handicap hurdle (1.50pm) is far from the best of races for the grade, so I’m keen to take a chance on the unexposed Charly Demonmirail.

Trainer Arnaud Chaille-Chaille is second in the standings at the track this year, with 27 winners at a 19% strike-rate, and his handicap hurdlers are operating at a very impressive 20% strike-rate there this year.

Charly Demonmirail only made his debut in mid-September, staying on well in the closing stages for a close-up fifth in the Prix Finot, before a solid fourth on his next outing, finishing a length in front of Amy Du Kiff, who re-opposes today.  He was one place behind this week’s Grade 3 Compiegne winner Janeiro Verde that day, while subsequent Grade 2 runner-up Politha was second, so the form has a strong look to it. 

Lou Fast won off top weight that day and heads the weights in this – he is certainly a big danger for a yard that has won two of the last three runnings of this, and was in front of our selection over fences here, but has since had a tough race in Grade 2 company.  Charly Demonmirail made a couple of mistakes just as the race was hotting up, but finished off well once again.

Chaille-Chaille won this last year with Odiago and it’s interesting to see him target this with an unexposed and very well-bred handicap debutant.  Prominent in the betting for the Finot, Charly Demonmirail was a hot favourite next time and was again strongly-supported on his chasing debut.  Clearly well-regarded, he is likely to prove better than this mark in time and though his inexperience may catch him out today, he is a very backable price on this occasion.
