A couple of bets at Cagnes this afternoon, but I’ll have to make the write-ups brief.

Calypso had plenty of chances in the UK for James Ferguson, but it’s worth noting the best of his form came with some cut in the ground and he has his conditions for his first run on turf since switching to Ed Monfort.

He has run very creditably in defeat on his past two starts and the return to this sort of trip is a positive.  Monfort’s Cagnes team are in excellent form and he looks a very good alternative to the favourite, who is starting out for Yoann Bonnefoy and having his first run since mid-November.

1.30pm Cagnes – 1pt each-way Calypso @ 4-1 (all firms)

A field of 12 for the claimer over a mile and Matt Machine looks too big a price at 9-1.  Markus Geisler has started the year in blistering form, with four winners from his ten runners so far in 2024, and Matt Machine latest run at Marseille Vivaux can be upgraded, given he raced wide throughout.

Runner-up at Vivaux off a mark of 38 on his penultimate outing, this is very much a drop in grade, the trip is fine and he has a better draw today.  The sole representative at Cagnes so far this year for Geisler, this looks an excellent opportunity.

2.05pm Cagnes – 1pt each-way Matt Machine @ 9-1 (all firms)

Additional bet: 0.5pt each-way double @ 49-1 (all firms)
