Chateaubriant Tips and Racecourse Guide

Chateaubriant racecourse is one of the youngest French racecourses and only started racing as recently as 1980 – most were founded in the late 19th century. The racecourse has gradually expanded its program to host 15 PMU meetings each year.

Located in the West of France, the turf course is a mile circuit with a 400m home straight The town is well-known for its Chateau and enjoys a pleasant climate all year round. The racecourse name Chateaubriant may have you salivating for a juicy steak, but in fact the tenderloin cut of beef name is ‘Chateaubriand’ and is named after the French writer and politician François-René de Chateaubriand.

The raceourse is not too far for the Chantilly trainers like Fabrice Chappet to raid, but do look out for Jean-Claude Rouget’s horses when they are sent here, particularly for the Prix Claude Rouget which he won in great style in 2022 with Mon Ouragan.

Popular sire Whipper broke his maiden at the track in 2003 and the track once hosted legendary Japanese jockey Yutaka Take.

The opening maiden at Chateaubriant (10.40am) is big on numbers but relatively low on quality, and at a double-figure price it is worth supporting Wedgewood Pearl.

Sixth on debut at Deauville in January, she improved to split subsequent Listed-placed fillies when runner-up there on her next start the following month, which looks strong form in the context of this.

Sent off favourite on her third outing at Le Mans, she travelled well enough but couldn’t pick up in the straight, finishing a disappointing eighth.  However, her trainer had voiced concerns regarding the heavy ground that day and, perhaps more importantly, Paul de Chevigny’s team were not firing on all cylinders at the time.

Her stablemate Star Of The Night finished one place in front of her that day and has since won a maiden, handicap and finished runner-up off 35 (UK 77) at ParisLongchamp last week, one of four consecutive seconds for a team that has been on blistering form in the past couple of months; of their last 24 runners, they have had 9 winners, five seconds and a third.

Trophane very much deserves to be favourite and should be tough to beat, but she is priced up accordingly and Wedgewood Pearl looks value as an each-way bet against her.

10.40am Chateaubriant – 1pt win, 0.5pt place Wedgewood Pearl @ 11-1 (Paddy Power, Betfair, William Hill, 10-1 elsewhere)

The 2650m maiden (11.52am) has the right couple at the top of the market and both Pont Neuf and Venus Oceane are open to improvement, with marginal preference for the latter.  However, newcomer Pinot Gris is worth a mention against them at a big price.

Out of a Listed-winning hurdler, the half-sister won on her debut on the flat last April for these connections, which is encouraging. Bressou’s only other flat runner this year (not counting his sole bumper runner, which won on debut) came at Dieppe last week, with the jumps-bred Webcam finishing runner-up on debut under this rider at a very big price.

First season sire Goliath Du Berlais has made a very strong start with his juvenile hurdlers and while this is a change of codes, it will be interesting to see if Pinot Gris can make a bold bid to give him a first flat winner.
