A few crafty-each way betting races at Deauville this evening and the pick on the card is the German raider Manganelli at 5.23pm.
Connections have been patient with the five-year-old son of Tertullian, who will be making just his 11th start today. He broke his maiden as a three-year-old when well supported at Lyon La Soie in October 2021 and then has a really eye-catching piece of form the following month from Saint-Cloud, where he ran third to two horses now rated 40+, Prince de Montfort and Ironwithers.
He had most of last year off, presumably due to an issue, but provided two strong clues that he could be better than today’s mark of 35.0, firstly with a run at Lyon-Parilly, where the 1-2-3 all won soon after and secondly, and perhaps more critically, when running 6th last time out at this course over 2500m. That distance appeared to just stretch him as he looked in contention for at least a place turning for home, and he also had a lousy trip from the widest berth in 16.
Dropped down to 1900m, he has a much better chance in this race than odds of 18-1 imply. Andreas Wohler saddled three winners in France last year from 15 runners in 2022 and is already a perfect one from one this year on French soil. With at least four places paid by all bookmakers, he is an each-way bet from stall 11, with connections hoping to provide Olivier Peslier a 50th birthday present.
