In Race 4 at Deauville this evening, I’m backing Tag at 7-1+.

Hammered late in the betting last time, he won over C&D really impressively at 3-1. Jockey Hugo Boutin looked really confident throughout and makes the trip up to Deauville today from Marseille just to ride this one (albeit he has another ride here tomorrow).

Drawn in the middle again, he has the back class to cope with a 2kg penalty and Tag is 6 wins from 29 starts on the polytrack.

The last time he broke a losing run on this surface, he won his next three starts, all on polytrack.

There are risks attached to betting in this basement grade but it’s a lovely e/w frame with 16 runners, he’s done his annual ‘job’ for connections and he is taken to continue a good run in France of handicap winners backing up next time under a penalty (eg. La Sauzee and Pitrizza in the past week, suggesting that there is a premium on form over weight at this time of year).

5.15pm Deauville 1pt each-way Tag @ 7-1 (generally available, some firms 13/2, bet365 go 8-1)
