The opening claiming chase at Cagnes looks a weak event and though I’m no fan of backing longstanding maidens, this could be the day for Honesta and she does look too big a price.

She has form over fences, handles very soft ground and has twice shown an aptitude for this course, including when seventh in a considerably stronger contest over hurdles 11 days ago on what was her first run since early September.

She finished well that day, so the extra furlong and a half should suit, and while her trainer David Windrif has had a very quiet year, his runners have been going well enough at Cagnes so far.

10.50am Cagnes – 1pt win, 0.5pt place Honesta @ 17/2 (various, 8-1 elsewhere)
