When you think of middle distance races in autumn, the temptation is always to side with the three-year-olds and their weight allowances.
Four of the last six Prix Vermeille winners have been older fillies though and there’s one I like today at a price to upstage the classic generation.
Melo Melo has always been described as a fantastic ‘physical’ and a mare that would improve over time. Her preference is for relatively fast ground and it’s clear from her race scheduling that she’s been campaigned with big autumn targets in mind. She stays further than 12 furlongs and she won’t have had to contend with a long journey in the heat like the three overseas raiders.
I was looking forward to watching her today but now she’s drifted out to 20-1 in the UK, I have to get involved. She’s currently trading at under half those odds on the local tote and this race has a nice each-way shape to it.
