We go to Lyon La Soie this afternoon for our first tip of the year, which comes in the opening maiden.

Vazirhan appears to be a logical 11/8 favourite in a weak-looking race, trained by the in-form Francis Graffard and bred out of the Group One racemare Vazira. The percentage call, as regular readers can probably guess for one of my tips, is to oppose him at skinny odds. Graffards’ maidens have been improving for their racecourse debuts and Vazira’s progeny aren’t the most forward.

Piperade was a late gamble for Fabrice Chappet on his last start here but he looks to have limited ability and can’t benefit from Marie Velon’s 3lb claim today.

This race looks like it could go to Jerome Reynier, who has his first runner of 2024 here in Rakhman. The Due Diligence colt got stuck in the mud on debut, last October, but stepped forward to run fifth in a similar race at Marseille-Vivaux a month ago. He appreciated the switch to the polytrack surface but ran a bit in snatches. He shaped as if he’d improve again for both the switch to a more expansive track today and the extra furlong, being out of a mare who recorded her best RPR over 2400m.

He’s put in as favourite by at least one tipster and although he needs to improve again, he looks overpriced at 6-1 in this event from a low draw.

2.57pm Lyon La Soie 1pt each way Rakhman @ 6-1 (Paddy Power, William Hill, Betfred, Boylesports, Star Sports etc. or 11/2, 4 places with SkyBet if you can get on there)
