Lyon Parilly Tips and Racecourse Guide
Lyon Parilly plays host to both flat and jumps racing through the season in the suburbs of France’s gastronomic capital.
Not too dissimilar to either Saint-Cloud for flat racing or Auteuil for jumps, Lyon Parilly’s races tend to be very fair and take place on a wonderful racing surface.
Lyon Parilly races in two parts – March to June and then September to December.
The grandstand was renovated in 2014 and the restaurant has 150 covers. The ‘buvette’ (burger van) next to the parade ring is also atmospheric and provides a fantastic vantage point for a few hours.
In recent years the flat stars to have graduated from Lyon Parilly include:
- In Swoop – broke his maiden on his 3yo debut and went on to place 2nd in the 2020 Prix de l’Arc
- Erupt – won his first two races at Parilly before landing the Group One Grand Prix de Paris and then finishing fifth in the 2015 Prix de l’Arc
- Different League – won on her juvenile debut and then won the 2017 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot
Over jumps, two recent graduates from the Lyon Parilly flat stand out over those to have jumped around Lyon:
- Lac Fontana – winner of the 2014 County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival
- French Aseel – scored by 22 lengths on jumps debut and sold onto Willie Mullins
Lyon Parilly Tips
The second race on the card this afternoon at Lyon-Parilly is a 10-furlong maiden open to colts, geldings and fillies from the Classic generation.
Unlike most of these contests, there doesn’t appear to be a fearsome ‘Parisian’ horse from a stable like Fabre’s or Graffard’s.
Valiabad understandably disputes the head of the betting at 11/4, being a son of Siyouni, but he appeared very one-paced on debut at this course.
Kitana Blue brings the best form here, placed in a ParisLongchamp maiden, but my best bet on the card is the German raider Modern Value.
The daughter of Reliable Man cost just €22,000 as an Arqana yearling, despite being out of an Italian black type mare. She holds a German Oaks entry and ran better than 7th place suggests on debut at Chantilly two weeks ago. She broke smartly from stall 13 under Theo Bachelot, travelling well enough that she delivered an early challenge on the turn, before fading late on. I was impressed with her gate speed, cruising speed and attitude when she met trouble in running.
She’s no superstar but she looks good enough to take this for the Grewe stable. She may benefit from a longer trip in time and should be in the shake-up.

Fabrice Chappet only saddled one winner at Lyon-Parilly last year, but the Chantilly trainer should still be followed when he raids Lyon - he was second to only Jean-Pierre Gauvin in wins in 2021 with six. Chappet can blow hot and cold but I think there is plenty of...
One bet at Parilly today, with Sodapop in the two year old contest (1.25pm). The daughter of Belardo started off in a newcomers’ race at Chantilly three weeks ago. I thought she showed a nice level of ability that day, travelling into the race, not getting the...
Henri Devin is enjoying a good time of it at present and the well-bred Affaire En Or could provide him with another winner at Lyon this afternoon. The daughter of Doctor Dino was ultimately well held when fifth at Saint-Cloud 18 days ago, but she kept on nicely in...
My first bet of the day goes at Lyon, where Impair Et Passe looks to hold really strong claims of getting off the mark over hurdles at the second attempt. The son of No Risk At All showed a nice level of form in bumpers last year and was far from disgraced in a strong...
The first 2yo race in France takes place at 11.00am UK time at Lyon-Parilly this morning and features an Elusive City half-sister to stakes placed Axdavali. Axdaliva is expected to go well at 6/4 but has a long journey from her Normandy yard to contend with and it...
The 1m2f fillies' maiden at Lyon Parilly lacks much in the way of strength in depth and though Floripa is the right favourite, I am taking her on with Ermelie, who looks a potential improver on her third career start. The daughter of Reliable Man finished seventh at...

The claimer at Lyon (11.20am) is a really moderate affair, as one would expect with 8-12K claiming tags, but there is a bit of value in the price of Malaaw. The six year old's last win came here in 2019 and he ran well in two handicaps here off marks of 31.5 in June...
Though he'll need to take a step forwards on the form he showed on debut, there are reasons to expect a better showing from Hilaire in the two year old maiden (2.20pm). The son of Muhaarar is from the really classy and precocious 'Swiss' family (the dam is a sister to...
One at Lyon Parilly this afternoon, with Tombecka looking a likely improver on her second start in the mile maiden (3.27pm). The trio with official ratings, Captious, Luycayano and Pennybaker, don't set an insurmountable standard, whereas Tombecka showed a good deal...
