Tarbes is a great turf course located in South West France with an unusually large nine furlong turf circuit.
Racing began at Tarbes back in 1809 and has really improved dramatically since it became a PMU fixture in 2012. Connected to a 9-hole golf course on the same site, Tarbes is known as a development track for not only the smartest colts and fillies of the South West, but also the Anglo-Arab breed, who are celebrated with a big day at the end of the season.
The Haras Nationale de Tarbes is the stud farm that is the base of the Anglo-Arab breed and also hosts an annual festival known as Equestria in July, which is free entry and has plenty to see and do.
A few stars began life at Tarbes. Literato won on debut in 2006, before exploding on the scene as a three-year-old the following year, winning multiples stakes races in France before landing the British Champion Stakes at Newmarket for Jean-Claude Rouget. In 2012, juvenile filly Alterite made her debut at Tarbes for the same trainer before placing in the Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc weekend behind Silasol. The following year she shipped to the States and landed the $500,000 Garden City Stakes at Belmont Park for new trainer Chad Brown.

Tarbes is not the easiest to reach and is takes just under two hours to get to by train on the local TER train from Toulouse.
Drive
Tarbes is one and a half hours from Toulouse by car or two and a half hours from Bordeaux.
