The Listed Prix de la Porte de Madrid (3.20pm) has attracted a strong field and cases can be made for several at the top of the market, but at a bigger price it is worth supporting American Apples.

An impressive winner of her maiden at Cagnes last January, she was subsequently purchased by Team Valor and sent to Francis Graffard, for whom she was in the frame on all three starts last summer, twice at Listed level and then over this trip in the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont, beaten only by subsequent Gr.2 winner Ebaiyra.

Returning for her first start in nine months, she was just pipped over 1m2f here a fortnight ago, in what was a considerably weaker contest.  However, that will surely have been intended as a prep run for this race and I’d expect plenty of improvement for the run.  Graffard, whose yard is in tremendous form, has also added cheekpieces for the first time, which could eke out a little more improvement.

The return to 1m4f will suit and though the likes of Castle (exceptionally well-bred and unbeaten in three runs) and Measure Of Time (Listed  winner last year) have strong claims based on potential and form in the book respectively, American Apples looks overpriced against them.
