Mainly low-grade fare at Ballinrobe this evening, but there are two of interest in the first division of the 2m5f handicap hurdle (6.30pm) and I’m sweet on the chances of the veteran Brogine.
A four-time winner over timber, she has won two of those races around here (as well as a bumper), and was a very creditable fourth off 13lbs higher last August.
She has had three runs back from a break, and looked to be running into a bit of form at Kilbeggan last time, only to be brought down at the third-last. Though she is out again just 12 days later, that has been a positive in the past with her. She has been running in 80-109s the last twice, and is worth backing on this first career start in 80-95 company, despite her advancing years.
Another who makes appeal in this contest is the John O’Neill-trained Tullyhogue Fort. His sole win came over today’s trip on good ground at Galway last September, but there was plenty of promise in his fifth over 2m1f here last time on his return from two months off, having kept good company over hurdles/fences this winter.
Unsurprisingly, he was doing his best work late on here and the amateur jockey who has been on board since last October (0-69 in Ireland last five seasons) is now replaced by a more-experienced conditional. The return to this trip is a big plus and he is worth keeping on side.
RECOMMENDED BET: Brogine each-way @ 10-1 4 places (all firms) AND Tullyhougue Fort win @ 5/1 (all firms)
