Royal Ascot Tips and Racecourse Guide
Royal Ascot is a highlight of the British social calendar, providing five consecutive days of top class racing with £6 million of prizemoney on offer in mid-June.
Royal Ascot is broadcast by partners including ITV, NBC and Sky Sports Racing. The traditional highlight is the Ascot Gold Cup for staying horses on Ladies’ Day, Thursday, but the purists tend to prefer the opening day, which features three Group One contests.
The race program is made up of Group races, conditions races and high-class handicaps. The World Pool tote betting operation means bettors from territories such as Hong Kong and South Africa can bet into the same pools, leading to some attractive dividends on long-shots, swingers and exactas.
The Royal Enclosure is available to members, their guests and connections of horses running. The dress code for ladies is formal wear with a hat. Men must wear morning dress with a top hat.
In the Queen Anne enclosure, where most racegoers are, ladies must also wear a hat. Men must wear a suit and tie.
Royal Ascot Tips
Andrew Balding had a fine time of it at this meeting last year and hopefully his first runner of Royal Ascot 2022 can run a big race in the Coventry (3.05pm).
Holguin made a taking winning debut at Newbury in mid-April, winning the same 5f maiden that Berkshire Shadow took before following up in this race on his next outing.
Holguin was given another run at Newbury, where he bumped into the very smart Persian Force, who re-opposes and is favourite today. While it’s hard to see Holguin reversing that form, he has plenty of scope to progress and that form is clearly strong. At 40-1, he looks a little overpriced.
RECOMMENDED BET: 3.05pm Royal Ascot – Holguin each-way @ 40-1 4 places (5 places with Bet365, Paddy Power, Betway)
William Haggas has his team in outstanding form, training an incredible 14 Group/Listed winners in May alone (including our selection in this), including top-level success for Baaeed and Alenquer.
The first-named looks a penalty kick for the Queen Anne, but later on the card My Prospero could give Haggas further reason to cheer.
He has an outstanding pedigree, being a third foal half-brother to Group 1-placed My Oberon and to last month’s runaway Listed winner My Astra, while their dam was fourth in the Coronation Stakes at this meeting in 2014.
Third on debut at Newmarket last October, he was impressive in making a winning reappearance at Newbury’s Greenham meeting in mid-April, readily getting the better of two smart prospects.
He stepped up again when landing the Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown Park last time, readily getting the better of Thursday’s Hampton Court Stakes favourite Reach For The Moon.
This requires more again, now taking on Guineas winner Coroebus, but he certainly looks a top-level performer in the making and makes plenty of each-way appeal.
RECOMMENDED BET: 4.20pm Royal Ascot – Mr Prospero each-way @ 5-1 (most firms)

Richard Hannon is looking for his first winner of the week at Royal Ascot, but his team have been running very well in defeat (including close seconds in the St James’s Palace and Gold Cup). He has plenty of chances today and I’m hopeful Sir Rumi can get him off the...

The 1m6f handicap at Ascot (2.25pm) has a warm favourite in Spanish Kiss, who looks to hold strong claims in his bid for a hat-trick of wins for William Knight, but at a bigger price Indianapolis looks the bet. The Ian Williams-trained six year old joined his current...
Donnacha O'Brien's Nicest ran really well to finish third at 33-1 for us yesterday and I'm hoping he can do us another favour in the Albany (2.30pm), with Elliptic worth supporting at double-figure odds. She was well-supported on debut over 5f in April and easily...
The Ribblesdale market is rightly headed by Noon Star, whose second in the Musidora looks all the better now following Snowfall's demolition job in the Oaks, but at a big price I like the chances of Nicest, who is bred to make an impact at this level and looks a filly...
The Queen's Vase has been dominated by Aidan O'Brien in recent seasons, but it's a race in which Mark Johnston also has a fine record, having won seven renewals between 2001 and 2014, and his Dancing King looks a cracking each-way bet today. He won the same Haydock...
