DONCASTER – St Leger Festival

The St Leger meeting gets underway today and Katie Midwinter has two tips on the card.

1:50pm – Class 4 Handicap

Courageous mare Sound Of Iona has been in excellent form of late and currently heads the market in this contest. She was narrowly beaten at Windsor last Thursday, before recording a win at Ascot the following day and placing when upped in class on Saturday. This will be her fourth run in a week and, although she has been performing well, this is an open, competitive handicap and others may be fresher and capable of threatening the favourite.

Course and distance winner Tipperary Tiger has 7lbs claimer Sam Feilden onboard and has previously run well in higher class races. Stone Of Destiny’s last win came at Doncaster in 2020, when rated 10lbs higher. He could be fairly well-handicapped but does need to reverse form with Dark Shot who finished ahead of him at Goodwood.

Treacherous is one to consider from an each-way perspective, as the eight-year-old has previously run well in handicaps and should be suited by the trip and conditions. He is winless in two years, but has gone close on a number of occasions and his current mark of 77 could allow him to get his head in front. Laura Coughlan claims 3lbs onboard Ed de Giles’ experienced gelding.

1:50pm Doncaster – Treacherous 1pt E/W @ 9-1 (5 places)

3:35pm – Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3)

German-raider Novemba heads the market ahead of this Group Three contest for fillies and mares. Last season she won the German 1000 Guineas, recording her first Group Two success, but is yet to replicate that form as a four-year-old. She did finish a respectable third in her last outing, when seen in the Valiant Stakes at Ascot, and certainly has a fair chance of bouncing back to winning ways here.

There are a number of three-year-old fillies in the field, receiving the weight allowance, including Harry Dunlop’s Adaay In Asia who is bidding for a five-timer. She has been given a rise of 17lbs by the handicapper since recording her first win in the sequence, when victorious at Chepstow in July, and is now rated 98. This is her first appearance in Group company as she steps up in class.

She is largely unexposed and her pedigree suggests 7f suits. Last time out over the trip she overcame minor problems in-running to finish first past the post and is likely to be there or thereabouts once again.

Heredia was impressive at Royal Ascot in winning the Sandringham Stakes but will need to improve on her attempt in Listed company at Sandown, whilst five-year-old Bounce The Blues has plenty of experience at this level and is capable of posing a threat.
