The opener of the turf season is the Brocklesby Conditions Stakes at Doncaster, a five furlong dash for precocious two-year-olds who often go on to black type success.

Mehmas colt Persian Force heads the betting at 4/5, which appears to be based mostly on his lofty purchase price and for being a brother to the stable’s Gubbass.

Eve Johnson Houghton won this last year with Chipotle at 8-1 and she’s taken to repeat the feat with Blatant, a mid-February colt who has been described as smarter than Chipotle in his homework. 8-1 appeals in an attractive each-way frame, particularly with Paddy Power and bet365, who are paying four places.

RECOMMENDED BET: 1.15pm Doncaster – Blatant each-way @ 8-1 (all firms)

Conversely, we will side with Richard Hannon in the feature! His filly Teodolina is lightly-raced and won on her seasonal return last year. Sent off at just 12-1 for the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last summer, she retains a progressive profile as she was poorly drawn on that day in our view. Teodolina has run well in double-figure sized fields and looks a good dart in this competitive handicap.

RECOMMENDED BET: 3.35pm Doncaster – Teodolina each-way @ 33-1 (all firms)
