UK Horse Racing Tips

Three selections today, one from Thirsk and two at Newmarket.

Tip 1 – 2.05pm Thirsk

There appears to be a lot of suspect stayers in this race and Stonific looks particularly solid. He has been in good form this season, winning at Ripon and also a valuable handicap hurdle at Market Rasen.

Stonific is now 1lb lower than when victorious at Ripon and he remains bang in form. He finished behind a couple of today’s rivals at Ripon on his penultimate start. However, that was over shorter and the pace of the race transpired against him.

There can be plenty of encouragement taken from his Pontefract run last time and that effort can be upgraded. He was held up last and the winner had a soft lead and made all. Likewise, the eventual second sat on the girth of the winner the whole way. It’s a big disadvantage to be held up at Pontefract on quick ground and Stonific did well to get as close as he did.

Stonific has plenty of solid form – albeit over shorter – at Thirsk and this test will suit him. He will be bang there when others have perhaps cried enough. He should be clear favourite.

2.05pm Thirsk – 1pt win Stonific 4/1 general (some 9/2 available)

Tip 2 – 2.55pm Newmarket

A competitive one-mile handicap at 2.55pm on quick ground on Newmarket’s July course. Zagato ran deplorably over this course and distance last time for no apparent reason. That was a lifeless display and a lot has to be taken on trust after that.

Nevertheless, he has shown in his short career thus far that he’s capable of bouncing back from a poor display. I’m willing to give him a chance to do so. His two stand out runs have come on good to firm ground and he gets those conditions today. On the basis of those two quick ground runs, he is feasibly treated and has potential from a mark of 85.

This looks to be a good bit of placing by his trainer and a prime opportunity down in grade to get back on the score sheet.

2.55pm Newmarket – 1pt win Zagato 11/2 general

Tip 3 – 3.30pm Newmarket

The final selection today comes in the 3.30pm Newmarket. All of the runners have a question mark hanging over them. Global Heat would be interesting on his Meydan wins. Living Legend is probably well treated but has two plus year absence to defy.

The solid option is Fabilis and the only one who brings a modicum of recent form to the table. His penultimate run at Ascot being particularly solid in the context of this race. Fabilis has to conclusively prove his stamina but he shapes as if this trip won’t be a problem. Yet to face ground this quick but given his record on good ground, it’s difficult to envisage it being too much of an issue. Given the doubts over the opposition, he should be shorter than the current odds on offer.

3.30pm Newmarket – 1pt win Fabilis 2/1 general
