UK Horse Racing Tips – 17 September
We have three selections today, one at Newbury and two at Kempton
Tip 1 – 4.05pm Newbury
Surrey Gold was hugely impressive when routing the opposition under similar conditions here at Newbury back in May. He has had a couple of excuses the last two times and is of huge interest now back at Newbury.
On his penultimate start the way the race panned out didn’t suit him. He was held up out the back off a steady pace and then caught wide as they turned for home. Again, he travelled well in the Melrose but he was isolated in the middle turning for home and the race developed more towards the stands side.
On neither occasion was he seen to best effect and with more ease underfoot today back at Newbury, he looks to have outstanding claims.
4.05pm Newbury – 1pt win Surrey Gold 3/1 general (some 10/3 available)
Tip 2 – 6.00pm Kempton Park
Crocus looks overpriced in an open looking handicap at 6.00pm. This New Bay filly showed a glimmer of promise on debut over course and distance but the pace of the race and her evident inexperience played against her. She then ran poorly at Haydock before putting in an improved effort at Ffos Las where she looked one to follow in low-grade handicaps thereafter.
Crocus travelled very well that day and was short of room up the home straight and could have finished closer. That wasn’t a strong race but it showed she has ability and can win a race of this nature. I’m willing to ignore her run at Chepstow last time, the firm ground looked against her and she looked ill at ease on the track.
Now back on an artificial surface from a good draw, I think her mark is workable and she looks overpriced against more exposed rivals.
6.00pm Kempton Park – 1pt win Crocus 9/1 general
Tip 3 – 7.00pm Kempton Park
Evaluation improved for the step up to 2m last time, in tune with his pedigree given he’s a son of Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate. This slightly stiffer test will suit him and he’s the one to beat. However, I think Good Soul makes appeal at the prices.
She has shown plenty of promise in her short career to date, especially on an artificial surface. When winning at Newcastle last December she beat a couple of smart sorts in Glen Again and Sea La Rosa. She then ran well under a penalty at Kempton Park shaping like a stayer.
Her reappearance run at Newmarket was underwhelming but she may have needed it after a break. I think there are excuses for her below par run at Chelmsford last time. Good Soul travelled nicely in to the contest but was repeatedly short of room from 4f to 2f out and had her momentum checked. She is an out and out galloper and being asked to pick up again wouldn’t have suited. That run can be upgraded and she’s of definite interest returned to Kempton up in trip.
7.00pm Kempton Park – 1pt win Good Soul 11/2 general
