UK Horse Racing Tips – 21 September
We have two selections today, one at Lingfield and one at Newcastle.
Tip 1 – 2.35pm Lingfield
Clownsman looks of interest now moving in to low-grade handicaps. He’s shown plenty of speed over a variety of trips in three novice and maiden events to date. Evidently not short of ability, the drop back down to an easy 5f looks a sensible move. He’s struggled to get home over longer trips on his last two runs and Lingfield looks like it will suit him.
A big concern would be his lack of experience around a track like Lingfield against more seasoned handicappers. Clownsman has, however, been extremely sharp at the gates on his last two runs which negates that concern somewhat.
In addition to this running style suggesting 5f will be ideal, that is backed up his by pedigree. His dam was a five-furlong winner as a two-year-old and the dam’s half-sister was a multiple winner over 5-6 furlongs.
Tom Ward’s stable remain in cracking form – operating at a 17% strike rate in 2021 – and Tom Marquand is 14% for the stable this year. There are plenty of reasons to expect a sizeable step forward on handicap debut against more exposed older horses.
2.35pm Lingfield – 1pt win Clownsman 7/1 general (some 15/2 available)
Tip 2 – 5.20pm Newcastle
Iron Sheriff arrives here after breaking his maiden tag at the 17th attempt but isn’t one for maximum faith. Sognatore remains frustrating and Melgate Majeure can record a fifth career course success.
He’s been disappointing this summer but showed signs he was coming back to form last time. That was a much stronger contest than today and he wasn’t given the hardest time coming from an uncompromising position. He stayed on steadily towards the finish and if building on that would have every chance today.
Dropped a further two pounds, he drops back in to a 0-55 for the first time since winning a nursery here a couple of years ago. At the prices, he looks the most solid proposition.
5.20pm Newcastle – 1pt win Melgate Majeure 5/1 general (some 11/2 available)
