York Tips and Racecourse Guide

Racing on the Knavesmire at York dates back to the 1700s and while it has a place in history as one of the oldest racecourses in the UK, it is also one of the top current courses in the country, offering excellent prize-money and featuring some top-class flat racing throughout the season.

The Dante meeting in May often provides key pointers for the season’s Classic races and the John Smith’s Cup in July always draws a large and enthusiastic crowd.

The Ebor meeting is the most prestigious event of the year at York, featuring Group 1 contests the Juddmonte International, Yorkshire Oaks and the Nunthorpe, as well as numerous Group 2 races.  The meeting concludes with the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap on the Saturday, traditionally one of the most competitive handicaps in Europe.

UK Racing Tips – 09 October

UK Horse Racing Tips – 8 October

A plethora of racing across the UK and Ireland today with good cards at Chepstow, Newmarket and York. Newmarket undoubtedly hosts the best quality action but our two selections come from Chepstow and York.

Tip 1 – 3.30pm Chepstow

This is fiercely competitive but everything looks right for a bold showing from Rowland Ward. He improved markedly in the spring earlier this year, the notable highlight when winning a valuable handicap at the Grand National meeting. Rowland Ward was arguably slightly fortuitous to win that race given Copperless came to grief when still cantering two out. Nevertheless, he did well to overcame a mistake himself at that same flight and overhaul Camprond on the run-in.

He ran creditably behind the aforementioned Copperless at Haydock in May and then was given a break over the summer. Returning at Market Rasen two weeks ago, he travelled well on the whole. He got slightly checked turning for home but kept on well to be beaten five lengths. Rowland Ward has shaped a few times that he would appreciate a sterner test of stamina so this step up in trip looks an interesting move. This should be run at a decent pace and Brian Hughes looks a good jockey booking for him. The ground will be in his favour and everything looks in place for a big run.

3.30pm Chepstow – 1pt win Rowland Ward 7/1 general (some 15/2 available)

Tip 2 – 5.00pm York

Lucander will be hard to beat if bouncing back to form but the more unexposed Tarroob makes a lot of appeal. She looks powerful and strongly built so her most recent absence isn’t a concern and could actually be a positive with more time to strengthen up.

Connections’ have had to be patient with her, she didn’t make her debut until the November of her three-year-old season.  She’s only raced four more times since her promising debut effort, winning a novice at the second time of asking. Tarroob has been beaten a head and a nose on her last two runs at Newcastle and Wolverhampton.

Seemingly kept away from fast summer ground, her last four runs have been on the all-weather. A more galloping test on turf and a step back up in distance promises to suit. As does the ground being on the easy side of good.

She has undergone a wind operation since her last run too. On the evidence of her last couple of runs, she could still be well ahead of her mark of 80. Everything looks in her favour today and a big run can be expected for a yard in blistering form.

5.00pm York – 1pt win Tarroob 8/1 general
